Math9-12: Innovating the High School Math Curriculum

Math9-12 is a research-based study designed to bring new life to the high school mathematics curriculum! This study is lead by Dr. Peter Taylor (Queen’s University, Department of Mathematics and Statistics), is funded by the Fields Institute and SSHRC, and is part of our Critical Transitions Community of Practice.

Each project has three interacting phases:

Curriculum development: work with students and teachers informally or in the classroom.
Development of teacher resources and student workbooks.
Classroom research: document the teaching activity and the student experience.

At the end of August 2017, workshops were held in Kingston, Ottawa, and Toronto to introduce the project to teachers. Teachers were (and are) highly encouraged to try the Math9-12 problems in their classrooms and provide feedback on their experiences.

OAME May 11-13: Many MKN CoP members presented and an MKN flyer was distributed at the OAME resource table.
Canadian Knowledge Mobilization Forum May 18: KNAER represented the MKN for the panel discussion with OME, KNAER, and KNSWB, and an MKN flyer was distributed at the KNAER resource table.
Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) May 29: Panel discussion with OME, KNAER, and KNSWB.

Communities of Practice Activities

At the first MKN Advisory Panel meeting on February 27 & 28, 2017, CoPs met and started planning for Year 1 (Nov 2016 – Aug 2017). To date, all MOUs, implementation plans, and budget plans have been approved for Year 1. CoP activities are now underway!

Kindergarten Forum for Action

Are you a faculty member at an Ontario university or an ECE instructor at an Ontario college interested in Kindergarten math? Join us for the Kindergarten Forum for Action on August 17, 2017 at the University of Guelph Humber!

Our Critical Transitions Community of Practice, in collaboration with the Association of Early Childhood Educators of Ontario (AECEO), is bringing together faculty and instructors who play a key role in the professional education of Kindergarten teaching teams in Ontario.

Faculty and instructors are invited to engage in dialogue, share knowledge, deepen learning, refine practices and connect with colleagues about early math development. The goal of the day will be to prepare a report and a plan for action to improve the mathematics outcomes of Kindergarten children in Ontario.
