Kindergarten Forum for Action

Are you a faculty member at an Ontario university or an ECE instructor at an Ontario college interested in Kindergarten math? Join us for the Kindergarten Forum for Action on August 17, 2017 at the University of Guelph Humber!

Our Critical Transitions Community of Practice, in collaboration with the Association of Early Childhood Educators of Ontario (AECEO), is bringing together faculty and instructors who play a key role in the professional education of Kindergarten teaching teams in Ontario.

Faculty and instructors are invited to engage in dialogue, share knowledge, deepen learning, refine practices and connect with colleagues about early math development. The goal of the day will be to prepare a report and a plan for action to improve the mathematics outcomes of Kindergarten children in Ontario.

Math Leadership CoP Updates

The Mathematics Leadership Community of Practice (ML CoP) has been busy! We are happy to share the following updates about meetings, conferences, events, and more.

OAME CONFERENCE

ML CoP members attended the OAME conference in Kingston May 11-13 and many presented.

David Petro (WECDSB; SWOAME; starting from Sept 2017, President Elect of OAME) did three presentations, namely: Meaningful Use of Technology (with Crystal Gascho, a teacher from AMDSB), Is that your Pokemon Go! in my Data?, and Letting Students Think in Grade 9 Math (with Gisele Jobin, a teacher from WECDSB). Here are the first slides and one image from the Letting Students Think in Grade 9 Math presentation.

CANADA150

See how two school boards in Windsor celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday through mathematics! [Received from David Petro and Kyle Pearce (SWOAME members)].

The WECDSB was recently in the last days of their Canada150 activity. In May students were asked to submit math questions that are related to Canada and have the answer 150.

The GECDSB is also celebrating Canada’s birthday through mathematics:

MEETINGS

Click below to learn about recent ML CoP partner meetings.

Greater Essex County DSB
On April 25 and 26, the GECDSB had a two-day meeting with almost 250 members of the math leadership school teams. The Board collected data related to educators’ needs and confidence as math leads, and some very relevant information is emerging. Presently, the GECDSB facilitators are visiting schools and meeting with leadership teams.
Mathematics Leadership Network
The Northeastern Ontario Mathematics Leadership Network (MLN) has started a Phase two with a three-day face-to-face meeting in Sudbury. After that meeting the MLN launched “Not A Book Study” using different online technologies to facilitate collaborative learning with Cathy Fosnot (based on her book, Young Mathematicians at Work: Constructing Multiplication and Division). All educators in the Province were invited to participate and they currently have more than 500 people participating!

The MLN team is now getting ready for a three-day conference in June.

Mathematics Learning Leadership Network
The Mathematics Learning Leadership Network (ML2N) completed their first two-day meeting in Gormley. The meeting was intense, addressing the aspects of mathematics learning for leaders.

Here are a few photos from the ML2N launch in May. Among else, the educators worked on solving and sharing solutions to the “Daily Skyscrapers” and “Wading Pool” tasks.

Daily Skyscrapers:

What are the numbers around the edges? Imagine standing around the edge, these numbers tell you how many skyscrapers you can see. You might be able to see any number from 1 up to the size of the grid.

Northwest Math Leadership and Learning Network
The Northwest Math Leadership and Learning Network (NWML2N) had a meeting in Thunder Bay on the second week of May and is presently developing their web site.
MLN, ML2N, & NWML2N
On May 15, all three network (MLN, ML2N, and NWML2N) leads met to discuss the results of the efficacy surveys.
Hamilton-Wentworth DSB
The HWDSB collaborative inquiry team had their first whole day meeting, and began collecting data. On May 15, the HWDSB collaborative inquiry team had their second whole day meeting, and have developed plans for the next school year.
South Western Ontario Association for Mathematics Education
The SWOAME held a meeting and started working on some resources for the ML CoP.
TVO's TeachOntario
On May 18th, the ML CoP members had an Adobe Connect meeting with the TVO team. They discussed what TVO can do for the ML CoP in terms of utilizing collaborative work space at TeachOntario, creating a documentary from their work, and creating online resources for sharing through TeachOntario. They created a video of their conversations and created a collaborative space for the Mathematics Leadership CoP on TeachOntario.

IK CoP Updates

Want to know what our Indigenous Knowledge and Mathematics Education (IK) Community of Practice has been up to? We are excited to share the following updates!

MEETINGS

The IK CoP met online with TVO to discuss how they can use TeachOntario to create an online environment that will showcase their work and create a collaborative virtual working environment.

OAME 2017

Many lead members of the CoP attended and presented at this year’s OAME conference, including Jodie Williams (top right), Colinda Clyne (bottom right), and Pamela Agawa (top left), pictured below.

The IK CoP also held a face-to-face meeting with their members who attended the OAME conference to get to know each other and the work they are connected to, and discuss their upcoming meeting in June 2017.

PUBLICATIONS

To help inform their network of the work they are doing, the IK CoP submitted their work to be published in the FNMIEAO annual newsletter.

SURVEYS

Three surveys have been sent throughout the province to assess the landscape with respect to the work of the IK CoP. They are targeting School Board Math Consultants/Coordinators, Math educators K-12 in provincial system, and Math educators in First Nations Schools.

If applicable, please take a few minutes to complete the surveys here:

This data will be shared at their June meeting and will inform their work going forward. As well, it will create a baseline for comparison at the end of the 4-year CoP.

FNMIEAO EDUCATOR CONFERENCE

The lead organization in our IK CoP, the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Education Association of Ontario (FNMIEAO), will be holding its Educator Conference on October 28 & 29, 2017 in London, Ontario. The theme of this year’s conference is Reconciliation through Education: Hearing the Truth.

Please consider coming and sharing your work! To do so, please respond to the call for presenters and/or request a vendor table by May 30th, 2017.

If you would like to attend, registration will open the first week of June.
